The Little Mermaid

Post by agent44 » Thu Sep 14, 2006 6:32 pm

When I was little, my sister and I had a set of tapes that told children’s fairy tales. I only remember two of them: Puss in Boots (one of my favorites to this day) And the Little Mermaid. I was drawn to the latter because of it’s dramatic ending. She ends up not getting the prince and is turned into sea foam. All the fairy tales I was used to had triumphant, happy endings and here this one was so tragic. The ending stuck with me, and I remember being disappointed when I went and saw the Disney version in the late eighties. I enjoyed it, for sure, what kid didn’t? But I still kept an affinity for the one I grew up with. Anyhow, here's my take on the characters, the moment before she saves him from drowning:

Wow. This is absolutely beautiful, Jake.

I much preferred the original ending to the Little Mermaid as well. :)

Is it color pencils or oil or dry pastels? I really love it.

Now that's awesome! It's haunting and sexy. (An Arthur Rackham influence?)

I haven't read the original little mermaid and I didn't care for Disney's version, but your illustration really draws me in.

I know there are about billion books retelling of childeren's fairy tales, but I think there is always room for someone to do it better.

Niether, it's a soft graphite pencil and the magic of Photoshop.

I wasn't directly thinking of Rackham when I drew this, but I'm sure some influence seeped in. I love his work.

This style is so cool. I love how simplified the jacket is.

MAGICAL!! I think it looks great, and the period-clothing looks corect to the H.C. Andersen time. So when is the book comming? :D

I also much preferred the original story's ending. The illustration is superb, both characters suspended in a moment of destiny (oooh, waxing poetry today...). Really really like this one.

Very cool- and very professional-looking. (If this were a movie poster, I would see the movie just based on the poster).
