Everyone loves Hope Larson!

Post by Kean » Mon Oct 18, 2004 12:22 am

It's true, because Michelle Tea (author of Rent Girl) says so.

Some of my favorite new possessions are by the artist Hope Larson. Her books are small and handmade--after running out of the yarn-bound Put on a Brave Face she busted out a tub of paste and other bookmaking ephemera and got to work slapping a bunch more together. Put on a Brave Face folds out like an accordion and details the anxiety of a bride-to-be with lots of neat cards for you to pull out and read as the narrator's dilemma unfurls. The styley cover of Stung is the ass of a bumblebee, and a purchase gets you a free crayon. Inside the book you watch as a slumbering lady get an internal bee sting, and you can use your free crayon to work on a connect-the-dots drawing and help the bee find its way to the fallopian tubes via a little maze. Her card pack Sex Rainbow is a small deck of cards printed with little segments and odd angles of some seriously fantastical creatures having supernatural sex, all in a lovely shade of safety orange.

Yep. Of course everyone loves Hope! :D Put On a Brave Face is different, and it's good. The signs of visionary talent. Keep on rolling, Hope.... 8)

Aw, geez... ::blush::

Thanks for posting this and giving me the strength to head out to copyshop #3 of the day, in search of an intelligent mind and a copier with solid blacks! :)

Hope rocks!

Seriously, beyond the wonderful tactile nature of your work, you are single-handedly responsible for making me want to learn Illustrator.

Tom Spurgeon (former Executive Editor of The Comics Journal) likes Hope, and Dylan Meconis too!

I completely agree with Tom that I'm "look[ing] forward to seeing what each does in the future." Especially Hope. :wink:
