Requisite Kanye Thread

Post by WillisDrummond » Fri Sep 02, 2005 5:48 pm

So, any thoughts on the new Kanye West album? I'm digging it, I'd say as much as College Dropout. I'm not too hot on the broke phi broke skits, though. Favorite tracks, so far:
-Touch the Sky
-Gold Digger
-Gone

Pitchfork gave the album a 9.5.

Skits are usually hit or miss on rap albums. Handsome Boy Modeling School had a bunch of Ladies' Man skits that totally ruined the album.

I'm diggin' Diamonds of Sierra Leone and Heard em Say. Good stuff.

Ack, yeah, skits are such a problem! They totally take you out of the experience like hitting a brick wall. I like samples, even long ones that are like skits...they just feel a bit more like they fit in most of the time. Skits often feel akward and forced, plus they usually go on for waaay to long. I like my skits like I like my women, short and sweet. (sorry, couldn't resist :P )

Also, sorry this has nothing to do with Kanye. Haven't really heard his music...

Heard em say is awesome.

roses has a really great rap beginning.

Diamonds -remix w/ jay-Z is so far my fave from this album. the collab of the both of them just so smooth!

Heh - I happen to like the skits, although I've heard I'm a minority. Gotta say, Gold Digger's probably one of my favorite tracks - mostly because Jamie Foxx rules. Also: Heard 'Em Say and Roses. Dayum.

Oooh that's the song that he did on Chappelle's show. Going to iTunes now. Common had a very nice verse or two during that set.
EDIT: I just realized that Kanye made two appearances on Chappelle; one with Common, and another with Mos and the other MC where they were standing on the East River side of NYC and Chappelle had that goofy green parka on.
Mos may have the best rap voice ever. His words just flow. Not that his lyrics aren't great, but I can just listen to BoBS for his voice.

Plus, he was Ford Prefect! Let's see Kanye do THAT!

While I love both albums, there are also a ton of tracks cut from College Dropout that didn't make the final release, but are fantastic. Regretably, Game's verse was cut from Crack Music on Late Registration, but luckily he put out that version on a recent mixtape.

Did you see that new video he just put out? I forget what it's called, but my sister turned me on to it yesterday. It features Kanye West (with Adam Levine from Maroon 5 on back-up vocals) rapping over an animation of a small boy going for a ride in a taxi. The animation's done in pencil, so it looks kind of like a doodle come to life, and...

Wait. Why don't I just show you.

http://www.kanyewest.com/ The video is for "Heard 'Em Say".

~IJ

PS: Plus they had the animator's name at the end. That's awesome.
