Please, please, for all that is good in this world, keep drawing. If I had the money, I would easily buy a book full of these or a framed print. Easily.

But I was wondering, how do you achieve that great wash effect? Do you just use the ink and pour it across?

The washed effect you say it's just a work with the cool-gray markers (I use Pantone and Topic). I use also black pastels (the dry ones).
what I do for the clouds and others fogs and mists; is to scan into photoshop black pastel cloud shapes on white paper, then I invert the document and i added on the illustration as a layer in screen or multiply mode.
The traces of orange color is kind of my trademark... I sketched in orange (i prefer warm colors, give to the pic a warm side) with those cool-erase animation pencils. I use to keep part of the sketchs underneath, I just like it.
then I use gouache or white acrylics for the spots of light.... :D or I use also photoshop for the highlights.

The seagull and bear ones are especially awesome.
