Nice work.

I'd like to start doing illustrations for periodicals. Do you have any advice about putting together a good portfolio, and the proper way to solicit this kind of work?

yeah, buy a list from Adbase, then go to New York and force your way into the art directors' offices and show them your work. Make them remember you, don't be a dick about it. Then later, follow up your visit with a mailer, a thank you card or something. It's all about networking and knowing the people.

as for your portfolio, just keep your stuff as consistent as possible.
