The illustrations of Nathan Olsen

Post by nateomedia » Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:23 pm

Hey gang,

I've been posting some of my cartoons over in this thread, but I've also been meaning to post some more of my illustration work.

Some of you may remember me posting this piece a while back:

It won Distinguished Merit in this year's 3x3 annual. Since then, I've done a few more:

And here's another one that is still a work in progress:

Thanks for looking!

Nathan

It's been a while, but I thought I'd stop by and share. I just finished this piece last night. Meet Jack, the giant robot killer:

These are great Nate! You work digitally, right? How do you get the watercolor texture in there?

Thanks, Stephen!

That first set of images were not all digital. I started with a detailed pencil drawing and then flatted it in Photoshop. Once I had the flats, dropping in scanned textures was easy. The key is how you adjust the texture. If you just set the layer to "multiply" you only end up making a value change. I prefer to make all of my color adjustments using Hue/Saturation — that way I can shift the texture hue without necessarily making the area darker. If the texture doesn't want to play well with Hue/Saturation, you can grayscale it first and then use "colorize" in H/S.

The new image is entirely digital, with the exception of a paper texture I dropped in at the end.

Thanks! That helps me out since I'm a multiply layer addict to my own detriment...

Glad that was of help! Yeah, I find that there's rarely a value change in a picture without a hue or saturation adjustment and multiply mode just doesn't give me control over that. I never settle for any color that Photoshop gives me — I adjust everything.
