Illustration (Picture now in post!) Thoughts?

Post by JGrubber » Sun Aug 17, 2008 7:08 pm

Hi gang,

I did this for a friend (her sons birthday):

Image

I am reasonably happy with the picture, except for a few things:

1- the monkey doesn't look like its moving
2- the colouring sucks- its too washed out etc. but it is watercolours, i
haven't had time to learn digital colouring yet
3- i still can't get the hang of when to go from brush to pen- i tried, but
ditched the pen because i didn't like the look of it
4- i went with watercolour paper- i just didn't like the work on bristol, plus i
knew it would be coloured, and the bristol i had just warped when i
coloured it

I would really appreciate some constructive feedback

thanks,

I think the coloring looks pretty good, Though i would go back and darken the backround around Tarzan. Did you maybe not like the coloring and then go back and sponge it up? I like the way the colors look don't beat yourself up too much, its looks good.

As for the monkey, I don't know what to tell you about making him look like hes moving. But the monkey turned out really well. And as for inking, my only suggestion is to just practice until you feel comfortable.

if you resize it I can make it fit in on the page, but as it is, way too huge. how about 800px wide?

it looks good. All your criticisms are things that will auto-correct if you just work at it.

As for the monkey moving, usually to make something look like it's really moving, you have to push its center of gravity off-center so that it has some momentum. It can be weird making things look like they might fall over, but that's what walking is anyway--controlled falling.

good luck.

oh, you dont' need to do digital color.
