illustration thread

Post by Frank Stockton » Mon Nov 19, 2007 9:12 am

Hey guys,

I'm going to try sticking to just one thread that I update from time to time. I'm going to focus on spot illustrations for now since I do so many of them and I don't usually get to show them. I'm going to try my best to post the good with the bad :P so you can see exactly what I'm made of.

The first three are pieces I did last week, the first is for ESPN, the 2nd is for Men's Fitness, and the 3rd is for an industry magazine called "Plan Advisor."

Oh man, so cool. I just love your style. Your lines are always very sexy. That last pic as a scene looks very nice. Love the pipes and mess of detail nicely arranged. Your blacks look beautifully spotted and I like your colors. I really like the second one too for it's quirky character and anatomy choices. I don't think his lowered right hand is posed as nicely as it could have been, from this angle the finger positions became very crab-claw-like, but you might disagree.

That is great Frank! :D
Are the illustrations connected to text in the magazines, or do you get to form your own topics for the illustrations?

Thanks guys--

Blom, these all accompany text. The ESPN one is about how college football is too even this year so no one has any idea who it's gonna be (they wanted it as generic as possible), the piece for Mens Fitness is about how to be a good Wing Man while picking up on chicks, and is based on a specific chunk of text in the article (they don't mention spandex, that's artistic license), and the third for plan sponsor was about "the nuts and bolts of Investment Plan Statements," which is purposely the loosest--for Plan Sponsor its such a dry magazine that they just want something fun and colorful to accompany the article. The AD suggested something that lead me to that idea.

This thread is gonna RULE MY ASS.

Some really imaginative concepts here, Frank. And great "mood" as well. Can't wait to see more!

I just finished this for Philadelphia Magazine. I am not super proud of the composition but I like how the house came out, I don't usually do illustrations without figures.

The story was about a transsexual going back to visit the house he grew up in and running into the ghost of his father. A real tear-jerker. They specifically asked for a picture of the house.

It's cool to see something without characters. I like how you incorporated line less areas and I like the impact the red leaves have against the dark house. I'm feeling like the architecture of the house is a bit odd, I'd almost guess not referenced but you might have for all I know. The two symmetrical towers are a bit strange to me and the smooth roofing of the central turret looks like it's made of tin. I expected to see old warped shingles but maybe you weren't going for that.

I really appreciate your compositions. There is a great energy in your pictures (first one for example).
You know how, and when, to use backgrounds or not.
About the house, you made colors with photoshop or this is a watercolor illustration?
I'm waiting for supergirl :D
