Project Gutenberg is an invaluable resource that provides free classic ebooks in html, plain text, PDF form. There's about 18,000 books to download.

Books like Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sherlock Holmes, The Three Musketeers, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Great Expectations, Around the World in 80 Days, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Wuthering Heights, A Tale of Two Cities, The Journey to the Center of the Earth, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Bram Sroker's Dracula, The Complete Works of Shakespeare, The Secret Garden, The Land That Time Forgot, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Works of Edgar Allan Poe. That's just to name a few. :D

i've used this. its great. helped me on numerous occasions with my literature courses, particularly the german ones. cheers project gutenburg :)

Methinks I read several Fu Manchu stories on Project Gutenberg after I heard my sister griping that they were unpleasant to read. I enjoyed them thoroughly.

Another great resourse along the same lines is Librivox which is a site working on collecting as many books in the public domain (i.e. those which can be found on Project Gutenberg) in audio book format.

Since it is entirely community driven and anyone can contibute the quality varies, but none the less it is a great site for people (such as myself) who spend 10-12 hours a week driving.
