I'm suprised I had never encountered Gormenghast until I was looking for something after reading Perdido Street Station. Gormenghast, by Mervyn Peake, is so far very entertaining (I'm roughly 300 pages into it, as I'm splitting time between it and Gene Wolfe's Endangered Species). I recommend it to this forum because it's a very visual book, in the sense everything lives and breathes through incessant description and unique characters. Also, it has a scattering of Peake's own sketches throughout. All three works are collected into one huge omnibus edition of nearly 1000 pages. Critics put it up there with Tolkien as a seminal fantasy work, but it's very different, and--though I hesitate to use the term--much more "gothic."

i'd agree with the gothic comment
a lot darker and twisted
good long read though
'something really witty/funny or profound here!'
