Library Recommendations

Post by VC » Tue Aug 17, 2004 3:19 pm

Apparrently my HS librarians went to a conference this year where it was recommended that they start including comics in the school selection *gasp!*

My librarians have asked that I give them some recommendations. I'm asking for some help because my list is very short.

Kare Kano by Masami Tsuda
Love Song by Keiko Nishi
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Andy Seto
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind by Hayao Miyazaki
Megatokyo by Fred Gallagher

I'd really appreciate some more recommendations. Please keep in mind that whatever you recommend should be durable, meaning nothing stapled. I really would have like to recommend the Serenity Rose series, but they wouldn't have lasted a month. Also please keep in mind that whatever is recommended has to be appropriate for a HS library.

Derek Kirk Kim's "Same Difference and Other Small Stories".
Craig Thompson - "Blankets"
Carla Speed McNeil - "Finder" (Dream Sequence and Talisman are particularly good)
Inoue Takehiko - "Slam Dunk"
Rumiko Takahashi - "Ranma 1/2"
Herge - "Tintin"
anything calvin and hobbes
Maus
Lone Wolf and Cub
anything by Tezuka
Akira

there's more, I just can't think of them right now...

The Bone Collection by Jeff Smith would be cool but would probably be destroyed in a High School.
But just off the top of my head....
Blankets by Craig Thompson (some nudity and pedophilia but tastefully done)
Astro City by Kurt Busiek
Leave it to Chance by ?
Kingdom Come by ?
Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Sandman by Neil Gaiman
Concrete by ?
Gon by Tanaka
Understanding Comics by Scott Mccloud
Reinventing Comics by Scott Mccloud

Actually, you'll be happy to know that we already own a copy of Understanding Comics. Reinventing comics is also on the list, but I had it under novels, not comics.

Top of my head:

Asterix (Goscinny-Uderzo)
Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi)

Safe Area Gorazde (Joe Sacco)
Palestine (Joe Sacco)
(though I hesitate a bit about those two...)

Courtney Crumrin by Ted Naifeh
Gloom Cookie by Serena Valentino and various artists

For the horror fans, The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman

Cowboy Wally by Kyle Baker

The series of "Big Books of..." by Paradox Press. 14 titles available,
though my favorites have been "Big Book of Conspiracy", Big book of Grimm, big book of hoaxes and big book of the unexplained

That's all for now

Another graphic novel that I came across some years ago:

Kissing Chaos by Arthur Dela Cruz. Overlook the artwork, but the narration is simply beautiful.

Oh, and check out Demo. Excellent monthly one-shot series by Brian Wood (writer) and Becky Cloonan (artist).

Again, as others recommended, Blankets by Craig Thompson and, of course, Flight.

I'd also recommend another, but they are either hard to obtain or in a different language:

Sambre - by Yslaire [French]
Anything by European illustrator/comicker/architect Miguelanxlo Prado (some are translated from Spanish to English, but I feel there is a loss of "emotion").
Lucky Charms & Apple Jacks [Japanese] by Tada Yumi. Stark, cold, yet touching. One of my top favorites among the other titles mentioned here.

Funny you should mention that one, I recently found out about it via Cloonan's devart account and am hoping to buy it for myself . . . sometime . . . when the world becomes nice . . .

I'll be sure to look up all those titles (lucky I hadn't printed my list yet).

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I'll probably give that list to the librarians on Monday.

Ha, you'll never believe this, but after I read your message I went and checked my mailbox and there it was (it didn't get bent, woot)
Thanks. I'll send you a proper thank-you e-mail once I fix my comp.
