Kevin and the Light of Destiny - Issue 1 done!

Post by thirdeyeh » Sun Apr 25, 2010 6:30 pm

For some time I've been working on developing an all ages graphic novel. I've pitched a couple of books to publishers and agents and in the end decided its time to take to the interwebs instead for now. I started up my new webcomic called "Kevin and the Light of Destiny." The book is sort of a mix between Indiana Jones and Monsters Inc. It's a lot of fun to work on and I hope you all find it fun to read. Here's the first two pages:

And you can find the actual site for the book at http://www.kevincomic.com! Thanks for checking it out!

I love the "Can't believe I found this place" shot. Great environment.

Hey Mike, looks fun! You should send me a promo image if you have one and I'll write a post about your new comic at my blog. Perhaps you'd want to wait until you have more pages before you begin promotion, but, let me know!

Hey, Stephen! I will definitely get something to you for it. But yeah I was waiting a little bit to start really throwing the seeds out there.

Hope you like the backgrounds! I took some liberties on some things, but that'll make sense why here in a few pages.

Geoff: Thanks, man! That panel was a beast! What's worse is I accidentally deleted the full res image of that page, so i get to repaint the whole thing when it comes time for the whole book to be printed. Woof!

Here's the next page:

Love the blur in the background. That's great. Has this room been sealed for thousands of years? How are those candles burning?

Great question. I would say that the answer is given in about two pages. :-) At which point I would love to hear your take on it, because I'm doing something with this scene that either will or wont work in answering that question from a storytelling perspective. So i may have to address it agian. In fact, I may email you about it.

It's a kid playing a video game! I think. Maybe I'll have to wait and see.

REVEAL!

Close Stephen. It seems our little Kevin has an overactive imagination.

Comic is looking good, Michael! The overactive imagination of the main character is a nice twist in storytelling, most adventure stories are quite straight forward. Is it going to be like "Bridge to Terabithia" where the whole adventure stays more or like imaginary? Or is it more like "the Spiderwick Chronicles" where the imaginary world slowly becomes real?

It will become real. I chose to open up on this so that it would kind of say something about Kevin's character and vision of who he wants to be. You'll see on the next page he's actually a little runt of a guy. So, I'm hoping to do two things. One, open up on something fun and exciting and then two show that Kevin's life is anything but. Which will flesh out more over the next couple of pages.

This comic is going great. Good transition to the real world. In the last panel I feel that the grass texture is coming off as very flat. Is there a way to imply more depth? Good color choice throughout though! Keep it up.
