GUTEN TAG (*updated 12/24/09*)

Post by Gunwhale » Fri Nov 16, 2007 1:29 pm

Hey everybody.

This is a strip I started primarily for the exercise of doing comics daily or close to daily as possible. It's a basic gag strip that I try to draw everyday in class. Here's the first 9 that I inked up. I've got some more on the way, so I'll try to get those up when they're inked.

I don't mind admitting that I really don't understand the last one... and I studied the Greek language in college. Maybe that's the problem.

But beyond that, I really enjoyed them. The timing of the panels and speech were done very well. I'm generally not a huge fan of short gag strips like this, but this one was well done and not about video games.

Kyle, thanks for the kind words. I think a short strip like this forces me to choose dialogue wisely in order to fit the panels and clearly set up the joke. And yeah, I admit some of the jokes are going to be a little weird.

Oh, and the two letters that meet are a gamma and a beta, right?

Here's three more.

Nice. Though I think I enjoyed the final panel of German as punctuation, even if I didn't always understand it. Also, I'd like to see what a little sharpening could do to for the lines.

The panda non-joke was my favorite.

Thanks Kyle. About the sharpening, I tried, but the lines were just too harsh and jaggy for my taste.

I'm coloring some of these and working on new ones for my university's newspaper. I'm excited, both for being in a campus newspaper, and also the fact that I have a deadline that I have to meet. But yeah, I felt that limited color would work best for my strip, since it's simple art, but I want to get some criticism on the color choice. I tried to keep the saturation around the same level for all colors, but I'm not sure if that's enough.

NEW (most likely submitting this one for my first strip)

Thanks, Will. I'm trying to keep the color real simple--no shading or anything special. Not sure if I want to keep the two guys the same color or not. I think I'll mess around with something that pops out more from the background.

New strips. (actually, old ones, but my old scanner makes it real easy for me to put off scanning them in)

New Strip!

I'm trying to get together a blogspot account to post this strip on regularly. Sadly, that's going to have to wait until after finals.

By all means, the studies come first! I enjoyed the comics. I like your color choices, and that the two guys are different colors. Maybe in some cases background colors could be the same hue but a touch lighter?

Keep up the good work!

Well, I had a break from my strip during my University's break, so I'm back at it. I've also taken some baby steps in placing blacks for this strip. I'm not sure which version I like.

New strip. I think I've found the fastest and most convenient way to do these yet. Before, I was just doing them straight in Photoshop, and I'd have to go back and forth in order to get the line work just right.

For this one, I instead pencil roughed it on paper, scanned that in, then 'inked' it in Photoshop, with the pencil rough as a background, and the 'ink' as a layer. hah. I'm sure everyone does that, but I had to figure it out myself. anyways.

Oh yeah, I have a blogspot now, if anyone wants to check it out. I know it's just a template design, but I'm going to customize it soon.
