Textbooks/technique books from formal programs

I tried getting into Sheridan here in Ontario, but didn't make the cut (a few years ago now). And I was wondering about the texts and books that formal programs use. What are some of the biggies, and are they any good? For example. Jansons History of Art is one of the benchmarks for art history courses.

I know, there is no substitute for experience and dialogue with colleagues and experimentation, but some of us don't have as much of an opportunity for that... and being a teacher, i know some people are book learners.

Do you mean comics programs or art programs in general? I don't know if I've had to read anything at all for any studio class.

I would like to second Preston Blair's animation books. The techniques are great for comics as well as animation (actually I've never animated anything so I wouldn't know). Line of action is something I'm particularly thankful to have learned about.
