Pricing work-for-hire: Help

Hi Folks,

I usually do our christmas cards and special occasion cards/invitations, and other odds/ends (as I am sure many others do around here), but I am thinking about expanding along these lines:

- personalized greeting cards (birthdays, retirements, holidays etc.)
- personalized cartoons/caricatures etc
- portraits of people pets, homes

My questions are these:

1. What is a reasonable price for a christmas card design? (for example a 5x7 inked/coloured cartoon picture)
- I would provide a digital copy for printing/email purposes, as well as the original in a frame. I could arrange printing as well.
- these would be delivered to a client by mail.

The issues of concern:
- my design price? How do i set it? Do I set a plat rate for the design, then they sort out printing after that?
- Printing the cards (done by a pro on pro equipment- not me at my home computer) is already setting them up to be around $1.50-2.00 (To print, cardstock, cut, fold, envelope) for each card.

Any thoughts?

thanks,

john

Well, I've only done one, I designed and printed 100 custom xmas cards, and I charged $150 plus cost of materials(You-Print-em cards) for about 5 hours work. Granted, this was a friendly deal with a co-worker. She was very pleased with the results and cost, it ended up running her about $185 total.

do you mean you did 100 different designs or printed 100?

Design price is based on the quality of your work and the value provided to the client. Rates in this biz are all over the place. It ranges from $35/hr to $200/hr.

Copyright ownership can also have a value attached to it if the client so chooses to retain the rights and use the art for other things.
