One thing I've done lately to make it all a little more manageable is to draw a readable rough of my entire graphic novel. It still takes time, but far less time, and then when I'm done I can get some feedback from friends and other writers, so I'm certain the story is working as a whole before I j...

Even the most cartoony-cartoonists should know anatomy. Knowing how to draw the real thing can be really useful, even when drawing squat or blobby characters. Because you still need to know how they move, and how their bodies fit together--this will only make your comics better!

Woo hoo! It's gonna be fun! For anyone who is able to get into the show early on Friday (the professionals-only part of the con), I'm doing a signing with Ann M. Martin, author of the Baby-sitters Club, from 12-1 at the Scholastic booth. Since Scholastic can't actually SELL merchandise, they'll be g...

Man, I really wish we could make this show! As it is, Dave and I will be in Oregon (for the first time) from October 13-16...then we're back to NY for wedding prep. It would've been great to squeeze in Stumptown, but it wasn't meant to happen!

Next year...for sure!

I've done a couple of seminars for kids over the past couple of months, and one of the first things I ask them is, "what comics do you guys like?" The answers always start with Archie, Spiderman, and Simpsons comics. I've talked to a couple of retailers who say that the Teen Titans comics are a big ...

Mac McCool--> Scholastic applied too late for a booth. Several of their editors were there--and Jeff Smith and myself were selling our Scholastic titles from our own exhibitor space (and the Flight booth).

Most people scan their art in pieces. Scan the top half of the page, scan the bottom half of the page, and composite them in photoshop. It's not as tricky as it sounds, especially with a lineart scan. Whatever you do, DON'T get a large-format scanner with low optical resolution (anything under 1200 ...

Those Canon Lide scanners are definitely cheap--and the one I had was AWFUL. I couldn't get a good lineart scan out of it to save my life, there was some problem with it and the scans always came out digi. I knew other people who had the same problem with that scanner, although I've talked to other ...

There's also the School of Visual Arts in NYC...they have a bona fide "Cartooning" program, with a bachelor's degree and everything, and you are right smack in the center of NYC's comics community--an invaluable resource! http://www.sva.edu I know there are a bunch of us on this board who went to sc...
