Re: 6-Commando

Thanks, once again, Joost! I was of two minds about the tanks, frankly, as I kind of had to compromise on the detail (as I've done all over this comic) in favor of getting the thing done "on time." The latter is in quotes, of course, because it's just me, and it's not like I have huge crowds of peop...

Re: 6-Commando

So here we go again. Inks now, color later. This one feels particularly smooth to me for some reason. I just like it. Of course, in looking at old pages, ones I liked at the time I now hate, but that's all part of the biz. http://www.viciousprint.com/6commando/comics/2010-02-01-E1P15.jpg Incidentall...

Re: A minor Threat

Remarkable that nobody has responded to this yet - it's a really beautiful and terribly creepy piece of work! I dig it! There's something Lovecraftian about it, really. And the heavily stylized linework and perspectives add to the bizarreness of it. Terriffic!

Re: New guy, new work, looking for a critique

I think your work is DEFINITELY improving! And as I'm kind of on a kick of saying it these days, there's a lot to be said for just doing something for the sake of doing it. I'm in a similar boat to yours right now - trying to actually produce a full piece of work! I think the biggest thing in it is ...

Re: Science fiction film "Errans Viridis"

I find this to be a strangely compelling start - I, for one, would like to see the rest! Of the two you entered in the competition, this one seems to be the stronger of them, at first viewing. It has a feel somewhere in between Ray Bradbury's The Maritan Chronicles and Fritz Lang's Metropolis, like ...

Re: Preliminaries, Illustrations (and other Sketches, etc)

Thanks for the look, Jimbo! I agree that the third guy is the strongest, but he's still getting the thumbs-down from the writer. Meeting expectations is a hard thing to do. And actually, he's not a unique character but one of a group, so it's kind of a uniform of sorts. I like his Techno-Nazi look -...

Re: Type of paper?

The hands-down best results I've had with brush/crowquill and ink are with hot-press watercolor paper and plate-finish 500-lb. 3-ply bristol board. They are the smoothest and most resilient, but also, unfortunately, are rather pricey. I like Arches Grain-Satiné watercolor blocks - they have a very t...

Re: What inking pen to use? Nib pens?

I don't think it's so much a matter of "best" versus "best for you." I use a lot of different pens and brushes depending on what I'm trying to achieve. For my current comic I use Copic technical markers, because speed and uniformity are required, and since they're alcohol based, they dry fast and do...

Re: Preliminaries, Illustrations (and other Sketches, etc)

Couple of sketches for a collaboration I've been asked to work on by a friend of mine. As it's only in the advanced planning stages and will in all likelihood fizzle out, I don't have any problem posting a few here. These are three different takes on the same character - goes to show you how dramati...

Re: critique wanted, please help!

I think it's a matter of contrast. In general, objects that are closer will tend to have lower value than those farther away (Darker or higher contrast reads as closer, and lighter or lower contrast reads as farther away). Also, the strongest contrast in a composition should be between the object cl...

Re: 6-Commando

Color added! Thanks for the compliment, Joost! Mike certainly IS big. Actually, I think he might be a little out of proportion to the tank he's crushing, versus the size he appeared on page 4. But I think it's forgivable for dramatic effect. Also, with the coloring this time I tried something new. I...

Re: Preliminaries, Illustrations (and other Sketches, etc)

Jimbo: my earliest posts were in an old Geocities account, which has since been wiped (when Geocities went kaput last year). Now that I have an actual website, I'm rebuilding the links from there. The preliminary cover for Hotel Metropolitan has been repaired, above. And I'm glad you dig my blog, to...

I particularly like how economical you are with your linework in this - less is more, I tend to think! You pack a lot of expression into very straightforward strokes! Very attractive!

Re: Cathedral

I personally have a thing for airships - this is a very lovely piece! I only wish I could see the rest of the art in that show, but unfortunately I don't make it to that side of the continent often enough.

Re: Semmie the Forest gnome [Updated 8 jan]

The art is particularly strong on this page, so much so that, if I had to make one critique, it'd be to repeat an earlier comment I made that the page could stand almost on its own, with nearly no dialogue at all. The colors seem somehow sharper here, though it might be my imagination, and the layou...
