Honestly I just grab colors I like, and start putting them together. If I add one that I don't think belongs with the others, I'll tint it until it feels right.

It's not a very theory-based approach, but it's what I do...

Thanks, guys! Mr. Average - that's Photoshop. It's a pretty slap-dash technique, I have to say. I'm picking my colors with some care, but as for applying them, I flat the strips by just cutting rough shapes with my lasso tool and filling them, letting the inks define pretty much everything.
