the grayscale suggestion is a good one.....too often we like various "bits" of our drawings and forget to see the whole thing / step back from your monitor about 8 feet.....if you can't see the composition you need to be fixing something Think graphically as well as solidly Think light over dark.......

I love good journals......this one is old......written about 1840 by Richard Dana.....he took time off from Harvard to work as a sailor / it's full of fantastic small details about the life of a sailor.......good reading for out of work artists lol...things could be a LOT worse ! I think it depends on what you want to print......I look at favourite books or comics and xerox a page up 150% just to see how the originals might have appeared ....and try working THAT size. The thing to focus on is consistency I think......you wouldn't want to do a detailed piece and reduce it 500...
