Re: Overcoming the Digital Artist Toddler stage
Below is my latest creation. It's completely freehand without reference material and it's not too bad. That said, I'm looking for a pretty harsh critique. What did I do wrong, and how do I do it better? The basic composition is strong. You did a nice job of creating a foreground, middle ground and ...

Great stuff, George! I hope you find more time for comics — the Phantom Skull is a lot of fun!

Re: The illustrations of Nathan Olsen
Glad that was of help! Yeah, I find that there's rarely a value change in a picture without a hue or saturation adjustment and multiply mode just doesn't give me control over that. I never settle for any color that Photoshop gives me — I adjust everything.

Re: Top 10 CD's for Creative Thinking
When I'm concepting, I need silence. For intense drawing, I sometimes can listen to music. When I go totally right brain, I like to keep my left brain occupied with comedy podcasts: Nerdist, Kevin & Bean, I Love Movies, Adam Carolla. Anyone else use last.fm? I just found a good scrobbler for the Mac...

Re: The illustrations of Nathan Olsen
Thanks, Stephen! That first set of images were not all digital. I started with a detailed pencil drawing and then flatted it in Photoshop. Once I had the flats, dropping in scanned textures was easy. The key is how you adjust the texture. If you just set the layer to "multiply" you only end up makin...

It's been a while, but I thought I'd stop by and share. I just finished this piece last night. Meet Jack, the giant robot killer:

Re: Haiku Comics
I really like the art style, and the evolution of it. It must be quite a challenge to tell a little story with a joke in a 3 line haiku! Well done. Thanks! Yeah, it is a challenge to try to make a comic in the spirit of haiku poetry — which is really all about getting at the essence of something — ...

Re: Asterios Polyp
I don't know, I was pretty disappointed. I am a HUGE fan of Mazzucchelli's 90s work (Rubber Blanket, City of Glass, assorted Drawn & Quarterly stories) and pre-ordered Asterois Polyp months ago — but, for all that, I just couldn't get that into the book. Much of the book felt like a technical exerci...

Re: Haiku Comics
Thanks guys! Yeah, character design is something I've been focusing more on. Not in the sense that I do turn arounds or anything, but I have been trying to expand the "vocabulary" of my style to encompass a wider variety of people.

Re: Haiku Comics
Meeting regular deadlines with Haiku Comics has been an interesting process. I keep wondering if I'll hit a wall, or if my style will stop evolving, but I keep finding myself digging deeper into the art the further we go. I think I've generated some nice work this past month, here are some of my fav...

I can't believe no one has commented on this stuff — it's great. I really like the girl with the "carrot" nose near the top.
